No surprises as England confirm Ian Bell’s starting place against Australia
Ian Bell will start the third npower Test against Australia after England decided not to add an extra batsman to their squad for Thursday’s match at Edgbaston.
Bell has not played a Test since his woeful shot kickstarted a shambolic collapse in Jamaica in February, when England were skittled for 51 by the West Indies, but he has been the reserve batsman for much of that time and will stand in for the injured Kevin Pietersen.
The fact that England have not included a back-up batsman in their 13-man squad suggests that Andrew Flintoff will also be fit to start the Test, although England said that he was only ‘quite bullish’ about being available.
England have not revealed where Bell will bat: he could replace Pietersen at No4, move into the more comfortable surroundings of No5, with Paul Collingwood moving up one place, or bat at No3 – where he played in the last Ashes series in 2006-07 – to give the under-pressure Ravi Bopara a little respite from the new ball.
Ferrari driver Massa has surgery after crash
Ferrari driver Felipe Massa underwent surgery on life-threatening skull injuries Saturday after a high-speed crash during qualifying for the Formula One Hungarian Grand Prix. He was in stable condition in the intensive-care unit of a military hospital.
The crash happened after a loose part from Rubens Barrichello’s car hit Massa in the helmet, causing him to veer into a tire-lined barrier at about 120 mph. The front of Massa’s car was shredded, with both tires gone and the front nose open.
The 28-year-old Brazilian also had a concussion but was conscious when airlifted to AEK hospital, his team said.
“During the course of his examination they established that he suffered a serious, life-threatening injuries, including loss of consciousness and a fracture of the forehead on the left side and a fracture on the base of the skull,” the Hungarian defense department said in a statement.

Over the spring and summer, H1N1 flu never went away. That’s very unusual, as seasonal flu bugs don’t like to spread during these warm, humid months.
